Richard Spencer, one of the leading figures in the white supremacist alt-right movement, told his podcast co-host that the alt-right didn’t actually believe in free speech and that the alt-right only claimed to advocate for it for “radically pragmatic” reasons.

Spencer and other alt-right advocates have argued for years that their ideas should be given platforms and unwarranted credibility under the guise of free speech. Their free speech argument has earned the alt-right column after column in national news publications and has been used as a bludgeon to argue that universities should be required to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to guarantee alt-right activists’ security on campus. The free speech argument has served as the alt-right’s admission ticket into mainstream politics, but Spencer’s recent statements seem to indicate the alt-right’s appeal to free speech is disingenuous.

In a statement on Friday, the ministry said it would revoke the concession on the mountaintop property outside Rome granted to the Dignitatis Humanae Institute, citing violations of various contractual obligations including a failure to pay concession fees and do maintenance work.

Benjamin Harnwell, director of the institute based in the Trisulti monastery, had told Reuters in September that Bannon was helping to craft the curriculum for a leadership course aimed at right-wing Catholic activists to be held in the 800-year-old monastery.

Bannon, who has launched a campaign to build a populist movement across Europe, has also been raising funds for the institute, Harnwell said.

Shane Burley // At the Texas State University, TPUSA-affiliated students captured the leadership of student government by electing Student Body President Brooklyn Boreing—amid student allegations that Boreing received $2,800 in donations and twenty-five tablets from the Campus Leadership Project, a subsidiary of TPUSA that focuses on campus and fraternity elections. Along these lines, Turning Point has been accused of violating campus campaign finance rules repeatedly.

“I think it was widely believed by the student body that the tablets came from Turning Point,” said Claudia Gasponi, a point that led her and her student colleagues to press the issue. “They have a lot of power on our campus.”

TPUSA’s history of being caught using racial slurs and making outwardly fascistic statements, for example recently departed Director of Communications Candace Owens’s 2018 comments defending Adolf Hitler, turned the tide for Gasponi. (White supremacists have targeted Texas campuses more than those of any other state, according to the Anti-Defamation League, and TPUSA often creates a slippery slope.) On April 11, the student body voted in favor of Gasponi and co-author Trevor Newman’s resolution “Calling for the immediate removal and barring of Turning Point USA from Texas State University and suggesting protecting minority and marginalized populations from their negative campus influence.”

North Idaho Pachyderm Club president Bob Brooke claimed that the event was cancelled at Pettibone’s request due to her desire to avoid the press. According to Brooke’s statement to local media, Pettibone “had prior reason to believe that she would be speaking privately at a private meeting. When she learned on good authority that members of the press and particularly the broadcast media might not respect her policy, she informed me on Wednesday that she would not be speaking.”
