The clinic at Sullivan ran out of the necessary sensors for Seth’s insulin pump on February 23, 2018. The new sensors arrived on March 8, 2018, and the process of hooking up the sensor and the pump was carried out. However, the sensor and the pump never were able to complete their electronic “handshake”, so Seth has been relying on his four daily fingersticks for his blood glucose levels ever since.

Seth called today, March 16, 2018. He reports there is an entire box of sensors in the clinic at Sullivan, but Dr. Wolf refuses to change the defective sensor, says that Seth is “wasting” them, and threatens to take the pump away completely. The defective sensor is still inserted under Seth’s skin, which could lead to an infection.

Seth also reports that his blood sugar is running high and that he has been falling a lot due to diabetic neuropathy. He almost fell down a flight of stairs, but luckily he was holding on to the railing. Once his legs give out, he relies on other brothers to help him get up, since he cannot get up by himself.

Seth was supposed to see the endocrinologist at Albany Med Ctr in March, but that has not happened yet.

We must keep the pressure on and continue to call Acting Commissioner Anthony J. Annucci, Chief Medical Officer Karl Koenigsmann and Superintendent Keyser at Sullivan to demand that Seth receive proper medical care. Dr. Wolf’s refusal to change the defective sensor, which is standard operating procedure, is a violation of medical ethics.

Please call, write and fax the following people to demand that all supplies for Robert Seth Hayes #74A2280’s insulin pump be adequately stocked at the Sullivan clinic, and that medical staff be trained in the proper usage of the pump and sensor. Be polite but firm. Feel free to email nycjericho@gmail.com to let us know what response you receive.

Staff at Sullivan usually state that Superintendent Keyser will not take phone calls and that all complaints must be in writing. If that is the case, ask to speak with guidance and ask for Seth’s counselor, Ms. Irel. Also, please take the time to write to Superintendent Keyser.
