Keeping it in the family: Equatorial Guinea president appoints son as Vice President – This Is Africa – Quoting to local television stations, reports say the president promoted his son, Teodoro “Teodorin” from “second vice president” to vice president. Teodorin, who seems to be the anointed one to take over the presidency has in the past served as cabinet minister and he will also head the Defence and National Security ministry. The appointment has been criticised and seen by some as an undemocratic step designed to protect and consolidate power by keeping it in the family. The 74 year-old has been in power since 1979 after ousting his uncle, Masie Nguema Biyongo Ndong, in a violent coup. President Obiang took over as head of the Revolutionary Council (which governed over post-coup) Equatorial Guinea and he sat is Chairman in the council in the same year when his uncle was convicted and executed for crimes including mass murder, genocide, embezzlement of public funds and treason. Critics accuse President Obiang of corruption and mismanagement of the country’s oil revenue and using public funds to finance a life of opulence for both himself and his family.
