Research by the Washington Post asserts that attitudes toward guns differ racially. Contrary to popular belief, blacks are stronger supporters of gun control than whites. Because the primary form of gun violence is self-harm, some psychologists see mass shootings as instances of extended suicide. It should be noted that despite media prominence, mass shootings are rare in comparison to the number of gun-related suicides/homicides.Gun related suicide and homicides vary strikingly according to race. As mentioned before, the majority of gun related deaths due to suicide exceed the number due to homicide. The PewResearch Social and Demographic Trends reports that in 2010, 61 percent of gun deaths were due to suicide. The majority of gun-related suicides were committed by whites 8.5 per 100,000. The firearm suicide rate for blacks is 2.7 per 100,000. However, blacks accounted for 55 percent of gun-related homicides.
